The cost of equipment theft to a manufacturer is both direct and indirect. Where equipment is stolen that is fully or partially owned, insured or financed by a manufacturer there is a direct loss. Even if there is no direct loss, stolen equipment is sold well below market value and therefore weakens the secondary equipment market. The indirect costs for a manufacturer are also felt through the increased cost of risk, whether insured or self-insured, and the cost of staff time spent dealing with theft and related issues. Perhaps the most important indirect cost is the cost of theft for equipment owners – the manufacturer’s customer – and the effect that this may have on a brand.

NER’s services for manufacturers are built around a secure, Internet-based system used by law enforcement to investigate suspicious equipment – the manufacturer’s Stolen Equipment Information Network (mSEIN – pronounced M sign).

Equipment Recovery

mSEIN provides the most efficient method to deliver information about stolen equipment to the right people - equipment distributors and law enforcement - at the right time with the right controls.

A manufacturer and its network of dealers can submit an equipment loss to mSEIN 24-hours-a-day. An NER operator will check the report and add the details to the national database of stolen heavy equipment. Approved dealers and law enforcement will be able to make inquiries through secure online access and a 24-hour toll-free number.

NER also sends selected theft alerts to law enforcement and dealers. Alerts are selected for relevance by the brand and location of the theft.
