Law enforcement officers investigating equipment theft are often frustrated in the investigation of suspicious equipment because:

  • heavy equipment is often inaccessible due to the nature of worksites or due to entry restrictions;
  • identifying numbers may be located in numerous places on heavy equipment, often in hard to find locations, which is further confused by numerous other component and attachment numbers;
  • data on losses is often either not recorded, in the wrong file or inaccurately recorded in computers to which law enforcement has access;
  • data on the ownership of equipment is not held on a national database.

To help overcome these challenges NER provides officers with an expert, cost-free service to help investigate and prosecute equipment theft, providing:

  • 24/7 access to specialist NER operators who will offer expert advice on equipment identification, PIN locations and other identification techniques
  • 24/7 searches of the NER database online via a toll-free number
  • 24/7 access to millions of ownership records through NER operators.

  • Additional online investigation tools such as a PIN location information
  • Local and national training programs and materials

Even when a suspicious piece of equipment is not actually stolen, a search with NER can quickly establish this, saving valuable police resources from being wasted on a dead-end investigation.

Police Award

An annual award has been established by the American Rental Association (ARA), ARA Insurance Services and the National Equipment Register (NER) to recognize the law enforcement officer or agent who has “performed exceptional service to the rental industry through the recovery of rental equipment or through theft prevention initiatives” in each award year. Theft Prevention

NER has developed registration and product marking techniques to help contractors deter theft. Deterrence will be most effective when NER, law enforcement, crime prevention programs, owners and insurers work together to encourage good risk management.
